English: Functional skills – Level 1 – starts 24 February – In-class & online

The course starts on 24 February 2026 and will be delivered both in the classroom (at our Strand House centre) and online.

Tuesdays: 7 – 9 pm (in Class) & Thursdays: 7 – 9pm (online)

Course overview

This Functional Skills English Level 1 course helps you develop practical reading, writing, speaking and listening skills for everyday life, work and further study. You will build confidence using English in real-life situations while working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

The course includes preparation for formal assessments, with exams scheduled in July.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adults who:

  • want to improve their everyday English skills
  • are working at around Entry Level 3 or above
  • need a recognised English qualification for work, training or further study
  • want to progress to Level 2 Functional Skills or GCSE English
  • are returning to education and building confidence

What will I learn?

You will develop skills in three main areas:

Reading

  • Understanding everyday, digital and workplace texts
  • Identifying main points and key information
  • Reading with purpose and understanding tone

Writing

  • Producing clear emails, messages and short documents
  • Using accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Writing for different audiences and purposes

Speaking, Listening and Communicating

  • Taking part in discussions and group activities
  • Presenting ideas and opinions clearly
  • Listening and responding appropriately to others

How will this course benefit me?

You will:

  • improve your confidence using English in daily life and work
  • develop practical communication skills valued by employers
  • work towards a nationally recognised Level 1 qualification (subject to successful assessment)
  • prepare for further learning and training opportunities

Progression opportunities

After completing this course, you could progress to:

  • Functional Skills English Level 2
  • GCSE English
  • vocational training or apprenticeships
  • further adult learning or employment-focused courses

Assessment

To achieve the qualification, you will complete three assessments:

  • Reading exam
  • Writing exam
  • Speaking, Listening and Communicating assessment (usually completed during the course)

Your tutor will prepare you throughout the course, and the formal exams are scheduled to take place in July.

Course fees:

All of our English and maths courses are free to learners, apart from those who are:

  • younger than 19
  • overseas learners
